potato cake

Potato cake made from held over cheese mashed potatoes made earlier. Sauce from canned tomato sauce purchased under the mistaken impression they were stewed tomatoes. Enhanced with sweated diced onion and crushed garlic with a few drops of Worcestershire sauce, and a little chiffonade basil.

This is the first time I tried taking pictures in NEF, Nikon's version of RAW. I chose both NEF and jpg simultaneously which uses up a lot of memory, but what the heck, I have a lot. NEF retains more of the original camera's data, jpg is compressed to varying degrees depending on the amount you choose. I was surprised how blah and colorless the NEF versions were compared to the jpg versions which were way over saturated. Photoshop doesn't read NEF, neither does i-Photo. Gimp does read NEF but not the camera's white balance, and I do not yet understand the controls in Gimp although I was able to make a few adjustments then save as jpg. Back to i-Photo for more adjustments that I do understand then back to Photoshop where I was able to incrementally increase saturation and use the burn and smudge tool to eliminate an unsightly and distracting highlight on the plate. Once the NEF was satisfactorily saturated I was impressed when it was compared to the original overly saturated original gif version which I almost used. It's like a ridiculously bright cartoon compared to this version.
